On two successive days, the flowers open late in the afternoon and remain open until the middle of the following morning. On the first evening the flowers are creamy white with a pleasant fragrance and the next day they turn pink. There are also at least three other species of\u00a0<em>Nymphaea\u00a0<\/em>with white, pink or blue flowers. The Nelumbo (<em>Nelumbo<\/em> <em>nucifera<\/em>) found in this pond is the lotus that is venerated by Hindus. The root stalk is farinaceous and the seeds are edible. Incidentally, it may be of interest to know that \u201c<em>Om Mani Padmi Hum<\/em>\u201d which means \u201chail to the jewel in the lotus\u201d is the most common prayer among Tibetan Buddhists. Originally a marshy spot, it is now a delightful water feature dotted with small islets. The \u201cPoule d\u2019Eau\u201d or \u201cMadagascar Moorhen\u201d inhabits the fringes of this lake.<\/p>\n<p>The islets in the centre of the lake are not accessible, except by swimming or canoeing, both of which are prohibited to the public. They are overgrown with \u201cPapyrus\u201d (C<em>yperus papyrus<\/em>), \u201cRavenala\u201d (<em>Ravenala <\/em><em>madagascariensis<\/em>), \u201cBadamier\u201d ( <em>Terminalia catappa<\/em>) and many shrubs. &nbsp;This vegetation acts as a cover for the birds found in what is a sanctuary, free from danger from man and various predators.<\/p>\n<p>This \u201cBassin\u201d or lake is rich in tilapias and another type of fish with long \u2018whiskers\u2019, called the \u201cGouramis\u201d. The tilapias have completely exterminated &nbsp;the \u201cDame C\u00e9r\u00e9\u201d (a gold fish which was introduced in Mauritius by Nicolas C\u00e9r\u00e9) and the Montezuma Sword Tail (<em>Xiphophorus montezumae<\/em>).
