It is thick-skinned and slightly\u00a0bitter.<\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; color: var(--theme-text-color); font-family: var(--theme-font-family); font-style: var(--theme-font-style, inherit); font-weight: var(--theme-font-weight); letter-spacing: var(--theme-letter-spacing); text-transform: var(--theme-text-transform); background-color: var(--theme-palette-color-8);\">From the 18<\/span><sup style=\"color: var(--theme-text-color); font-family: var(--theme-font-family); font-style: var(--theme-font-style, inherit); font-weight: var(--theme-font-weight); letter-spacing: var(--theme-letter-spacing); text-transform: var(--theme-text-transform); background-color: var(--theme-palette-color-8);\">th<\/sup><span style=\"font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; color: var(--theme-text-color); font-family: var(--theme-font-family); font-style: var(--theme-font-style, inherit); font-weight: var(--theme-font-weight); letter-spacing: var(--theme-letter-spacing); text-transform: var(--theme-text-transform); background-color: var(--theme-palette-color-8);\"> century up to today, the Botanic Garden has been known under several names such\u00a0 as \u201cJardin de\u00a0Mon Plaisir\u201d, \u201cJardin des Plantes\u201d, \u201cLe Jardin National\u00a0de I\u2019 Isle de France\u201d, \u201cJardin du Roy\u201d, \u201cJardin Botanique de Pamplemousses\u201d, and \u201cThe Royal Botanical Garden, Pamplemousses\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; background-color: var(--theme-palette-color-8); color: var(--theme-text-color); font-family: var(--theme-font-family); font-style: var(--theme-font-style, inherit); font-weight: var(--theme-font-weight); letter-spacing: var(--theme-letter-spacing); text-transform: var(--theme-text-transform);\">On 18th September 1988,\u00a0 the Garden was renamed the \u201cSir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam\u00a0Botanic Garden\u201d in remembrance of the first Prime\u00a0Minister of Mauritius.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>The Garden achieved international fame in the 18<sup>th<\/sup> century, as it became \u2018the tropical base\u2019 for experimentation for the Paris <em>Jardin des Plantes<\/em>. It was once described as \u201cone of the marvels of the\u00a0world\u201d. The Garden is the oldest Botanic Garden\u00a0of the Southern Hemisphere. For a long time, it ranked third among all the gardens that could be\u00a0admired over the surface of the globe.<\/p><p>Today, the Garden covers an area of 33 hectares consisting of scenic\u00a0attractions and recreation grounds for visitors, but most importantly it is a plant conservatory. Besides the exotic species planted and maintained,\u00a0there are threatened plant species from the Mascarenes. These plants are important for\u00a0their scientific, medicinal, economic and aesthetic values. There are 823 species in the Garden which include 445 exotics, 80 palms, 150 medicinal, 60 endemic, 27 spice, 30 religious, and 31 ferns.<\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; background-color: var(--theme-palette-color-8); color: var(--theme-text-color); font-family: var(--theme-font-family); font-style: var(--theme-font-style, inherit); font-weight: var(--theme-font-weight); letter-spacing: var(--theme-letter-spacing); text-transform: var(--theme-text-transform);\">The headquarters of the\u00a0Garden are found in the <\/span><em style=\"background-color: var(--theme-palette-color-8); color: var(--theme-text-color); font-family: var(--theme-font-family); font-weight: var(--theme-font-weight); letter-spacing: var(--theme-letter-spacing); text-transform: var(--theme-text-transform);\">Chateau Mon Plaisir<\/em><span style=\"font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; background-color: var(--theme-palette-color-8); color: var(--theme-text-color); font-family: var(--theme-font-family); font-style: var(--theme-font-style, inherit); font-weight: var(--theme-font-weight); letter-spacing: var(--theme-letter-spacing); text-transform: var(--theme-text-transform);\"> which was built\u00a0in 1823. It has been renovated several times over the years.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; background-color: var(--theme-palette-color-8); color: var(--theme-text-color); font-family: var(--theme-font-family); font-style: var(--theme-font-style, inherit); font-weight: var(--theme-font-weight); letter-spacing: var(--theme-letter-spacing); text-transform: var(--theme-text-transform);\">The Botanic Garden is managed by a Trust known as the SSR Botanic Garden Trust enacted in May 1999. The main objectives of the SSR Botanic Garden Trust are conservation, education, recreation, culture and history.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-13ffc04 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"13ffc04\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8e75f49 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8e75f49\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4><strong>Rehabilitation of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanic Garden, Pamplemousses<\/strong><\/h4>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-77c627f e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"77c627f\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2d8982d elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget elementor-widget-video\" data-id=\"2d8982d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-settings=\"{&quot;youtube_url&quot;:&quot;https:\\\/\\\/www.youtube.com\\\/watch?v=RMuKr_exoXw&quot;,&quot;video_type&quot;:&quot;youtube&quot;,&quot;controls&quot;:&quot;yes&quot;}\" data-widget_type=\"video.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-wrapper elementor-open-inline\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-video\"><\/div>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5c5002b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5c5002b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>A complete programme of rehabilitation at the SSR Botanic Garden has been initiated in January 2024 along three themes: Infrastructural, Scientific and Cultural, the latter encompassing the history, the patrimony, the pedagogy and the communication strategies with the various publics including a new website and production of a video to highlight the history of the Garden and its botanical treasures.\u00a0 Ten strategy goals have been defined including staffing, administrative operations and management system, renovation and maintenance of historical buildings, monuments and infrastructure, master plan of the Garden for short, medium and long term, creation of a visitors\u2019 experience, development of commercial activities compatible with the mission of the Garden, implementation of a suitable Governance model, among others. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) have been elaborated to reflect overall trend in measures of success. This will include among others: living plant collections and new accessions, recovery of endangered species in the Garden, propagation of new species, horticultural programme, extension of the Garden with different themes such as endemic plants of Mauritius and of the Mascarenes, collection of highly threatened species, children\u2019s garden, orchid garden, etc\u2026 Priority will be given to scientific research in collaboration with local institutions as well as overseas ones.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2e59aaf e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"2e59aaf\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8bfc914 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8bfc914\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Public awareness and education will be given priority and also be a measure of effective communication about the importance of plants and the environment and to ensure the right balance between recreation and education. Change in attitude of public will be a measure of impact of the management of the Garden.<\/p><p>In terms of infrastructure, <strong>the signage of the plant species<\/strong> is being modernised with the inclusion of QR codes on the displays and panels.\u00a0 The various facilities will be totally reviewed because no successful public attraction can function effectively without certain key services such as seating, on-site security to ensure public safety and order, toilets, eateries and weather-proof shelters.\u00a0 The rehabilitation of the existing <em>Ch\u00e2teau Mon Plaisir<\/em>, previous Director\u2019s house, the old police post, kiosks and building of new ones, etc. The public will judge the quality of the Garden on these criteria.<\/p><p>The infrastructures such as roads and alleys, pools and ponds, water flow and general landscaping will be priorities. The shade house will be rehabilitated as required for a proper nursery while quarantine glasshouses will be erected to facilitate acquisition of new species and export of local ones on an exchange basis, in collaboration with the National Plant Protection Authorities.<\/p><p>The\u00a0<em>Ch\u00e2teau Mon Plaisir<\/em> will be turned into the icon of the Garden and will house an exhibition of the famous botanical expeditions in the Mascarenes especially in the 18th\u00a0and 19th\u00a0centuries, a conference room, paintings of famous botanists and plants of Mauritius and the region.<\/p><p>In the framework of the rehabilitation project, the SSR Botanic Garden Trust has enlisted the services of an accomplished scientist of international repute and botanist by training.
