He did pioneering botanical work by his descriptions and illustrations of orchids from this region, 52 species from Mauritius and 55 from La R\u00e9union.<\/p><p>In 1802 Louis-Marie Aubert du Petit-Thouars was able to return to France with a collection of about 2000 plants; including the <em>Angraecum elatum<\/em>, collected from Isle de France.<\/p><p>His book\u00a0<em>Histoire des v\u00e9g\u00e9taux recueillis dans les \u00eeles de France, de Bourbon et de Madagascar; <\/em>illustrated by many beautiful drawings, was published in 1804.\u00a0 His other publications are :\u00a0<em>M\u00e9langes de botanique et de voyages<\/em>\u00a0in 1811and\u00a0<em>Histoire particuli\u00e8re des plantes orchid\u00e9es recueillies dans les trois \u00eeles australes de France, de Bourbon et de Madagascar<\/em>\u00a0<\/p><p>In 1807, Aubert du Petit-Thouars\u00a0was appointed Director of The Imperial Nurseries of Roule in Paris; a position he held until 1827. He was elected member of the prestigious\u00a0<em>Acad\u00e9mie des Sciences<\/em>\u00a0on 10 April 1820.<\/p><p>Louis-Marie Aubert du Petit-Thouars is considered as a pioneer in botany, to whom modern science still owes a lot. Most of his collection went to the Mus\u00e9e de Paris, while some species ended up at Kew Gardens.<\/p><p>An extensive number of plants are named after Louis-Marie Aubert du Petit-Thouars.
