He arrived on <em>Isle de France<\/em> in 1768 and stayed for three years during which he served as an engineer and studied plants. Bernardin de Saint-Pierre based part of the novel on a shipwreck near the island, the St. G\u00e9ran in 1744.<\/p><p>On his return to France in 1771, Bernardin de Saint-Pierre became friendly with and a pupil of\u00a0Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Together they studied the plants in and around Paris. \u00a0<\/p><p>In 1773 Bernardin de Saint-Pierre published Voyage<em> \u00e0 l&#8217;\u00cele de France<\/em>, the\u00a0<em>\u00c9tudes de la nature<\/em>\u00a0in 1784 and his masterpiece,\u00a0<em>Paul et Virginie<\/em> in 1788<\/p><p>In 1795 Bernardin de Saint-Pierre was elected to the\u00a0<em>Institut de France<\/em> and in 1797 he became Director of <em>Jardin des plantes<\/em> in Paris.<\/p><p>In 1803 Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, was elected a member of the\u00a0<em>Acad\u00e9mie fran\u00e7aise<\/em>.
