Stag Park

The animal corner has some deer (Cervus timorensis) and tortoises (Aldabrachelys gigantea).

The Cervus timorensis was introduced in Mauritius by the Dutch on 8th November 1639. The original stock came from Batavia on board the Dutch ship, Cappel, which was commanded by Governor Adrien Van der Stel.

Birds

The garden also boasts several bird species. Parrots, ducks and the Madagascar moorhen commonly known as “Poule d’Eau” are regularly encountered.

Within the ponds, several aquatic animals such as turtles, fish and eels can be seen.

The bat Pteropus niger, the only endemic mammal in Mauritius nests in the Garden.
